Push Press Tips:
Technique Tips for Powerful Pressing

Use the push press tips on this page to polish your technique. Your results and your safety depend on whether you know how to do the push press with proper form.

Tips. Here are a few push press tips that will help you improve technique, so that you can fully exploit the benefits of the push press exercise.

  • Tilt Head Down. As you lean your torso forward, you should naturally tuck your chin toward your chest.
  • Eyes Forward. Keep your eyes forward at all times during this exercise; even when your head is tilted down.
  • Don't Lower the Bar All the Way if it Hurts. If you feel undue shoulder strain when lowering the weight, then don't go all the way down to your shoulders. Instead, try stopping the bar when it reaches your neck.
  • Don't Bend Legs Too Early. Do not dip your body for the next repetition until after you have completed the negative repetition for the current repetition. If you are unable to do this, then chances are you should decrease the weight.
  • Keep Wrists Straight. Keep your wrists as straight as possible when pressing. If your wrists are bent too far backward, it causes an inefficient transfer of power into the barbell. Note, however, that your wrists will bend somewhat when you're using very heavy weights.
  • Squeeze Glutes & Keep Abs Tight. Protect your lower back from injury by squeezing your gluteal muscles and your abs. This prevents your lower back from entering a dangerous position.
